Real people who've been through it, helping families navigate the tough stuff with empathy and straight talk.
Look, I didn't start out thinking I'd spend my career helping families through divorces and estate planning. After going through my own parents' messy separation when I was in law school, something clicked. I realized how much damage gets done when lawyers treat families like just another file number.
Been practicing family law for about 15 years now here in Vancouver. Started at one of those big downtown firms where everything's billable hours and court battles. That wasn't for me. Founded Jade FME Continuum because I wanted to do things differently - mediation first, collaborative approaches, keeping kids out of the crossfire whenever possible.
I've got my certification in family mediation and collaborative practice. But honestly? The best teacher's been listening to hundreds of families tell their stories. Every situation's different, and cookie-cutter solutions don't work when you're dealing with people's lives.
I came to estate planning through the back door, you could say. My grandma passed without a proper will, and watching my family fight over her stuff for two years? That was brutal. Changed my whole career path right there.
Most folks think estate planning's just for rich people or something you do when you're old. That's total nonsense. I've seen 30-year-olds with young kids who need protection, blended families trying to figure out fairness, and yeah, seniors wanting to make sure their wishes actually get followed.
What I love about this work is it's not morbid like people think. It's actually about protecting the people you love and making sure there's one less thing for them to stress about when you're gone. Plus, powers of attorney and health directives - that stuff matters RIGHT NOW, not just when you die.
Child custody cases are probably the hardest part of family law, full stop. I worked in child welfare before getting my law degree, so I've seen what happens when adults forget to put kids first. That experience shaped everything about how I practice.
Parents come in thinking custody's about winning or losing. Nope. It's about figuring out what actually works for the kids. Sometimes that means pushing back on what a client wants because it's not gonna fly with the court or, more importantly, it's not what's best for their kid.
I'm also the person who handles a lot of our elder law matters - guardianship, capacity issues, financial abuse stuff. There's overlap, honestly. It's all about protecting vulnerable people and making sure their voices get heard even when they can't speak for themselves.
Here's the thing - we didn't create this firm to rack up billable hours or drag families through endless court battles. Been there, seen that at other places, and it sucks.
Our whole philosophy's built around this: legal transitions don't have to destroy families. Divorce is hard enough without lawyers making it worse. Estate planning shouldn't feel like you're planning your funeral. And custody fights? There's usually a better way than letting a judge who doesn't know your kids decide everything.
We push mediation and collaborative solutions because they actually work more often than people think. Yeah, sometimes you gotta go to court - we're ready for that too. But starting with warfare shouldn't be the default.
Bottom line: We're here to guide families through the legal stuff with honesty, empathy, and practical solutions that actually fit real life. Not textbook answers - real answers for real people.
